EnergyCheck

The App That Helps Ireland Check the Accuracy of Their Energy Bills.

If your electricity or gas bills seem too high or don’t add up, EnergyCheck tells you what you should really be paying — giving you clear, accurate proof you can rely on.

Many households in Ireland feel they’re being overcharged on their electricity and gas bills. Too often, people simply trust what’s printed — but suppliers don’t always make it easy to check the maths for yourself.

Whether it’s inflated estimated readings, unreliable smart-meter data, or billing portals that make no sense, the system often leaves households guessing instead of giving clear answers. EnergyCheck helps you cut through the confusion.

EnergyCheck is the iPhone app built specifically for Irish fixed-rate electricity and gas plans. It helps you track your real usage, verify each bill against your own calculations, and gives you the evidence you need if you ever want to challenge a charge.

EnergyCheck works with all Irish providers — including Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis Energy, SSE Airtricity, Energia, Pinergy and PrepayPower.

Are You Being Overcharged for Energy?

Do you suspect you’re paying too much for electricity or gas but don’t know how to prove it?

  • ❓ Are your electricity or gas bills hard to verify or confusing to read?
  • ❓ Do your direct debits feel too high compared to your actual usage?
  • ❓ Have you had disputes with your supplier but lacked clear evidence?

Step 1 – Set Up Your Fixed Energy Tariffs

To verify your bills properly, start by entering your Irish electricity and gas tariffs into EnergyCheck.

Just input your unit rate in c/kWh, your daily standing charge in €/day, and the VAT rate (typically 9% for domestic energy). If your supplier includes carbon tax within the unit rate, you don’t need to enter anything extra — simply use the rate shown on your bill.

Once saved, EnergyCheck applies these values to your readings automatically, giving you a clear and accurate view of your true energy costs in euros.

EnergyCheck is designed for fixed-rate tariffs and standard domestic plans. It does not support time-of-use tariffs or complex day/night breakdowns. This focus on fixed rates gives you a reliable, independent way to check what your bills should be, without needing an MPRN or GPRN.

Step 2 – Log Your Meter Reads and See Your Real Usage

Each month — ideally just before your bill is issued — take a manual reading from your electricity and gas meters and enter it into EnergyCheck.

Even if you have a smart meter, it’s worth checking the physical display to avoid missing data or communication errors. That way, you’re always working from real, verifiable numbers.

EnergyCheck uses your meter readings plus your tariff details to calculate your actual costs in euros — not estimates. You’ll see exactly how many kWh you used, how much of your bill is standing charge, and how much comes from real consumption. If the amount on your supplier’s bill doesn’t match, you’ll know — and you’ll have the figures to back it up.

Step 3 – Attach Timestamped Photos to Each Reading

Suppliers can dispute numbers. Landlords can question readings. But a clear photo of the meter with a timestamp is hard to argue with.

EnergyCheck includes Photo Meter Logging so you can snap and store images of your electricity and gas meters alongside each reading. Over time, this builds a verifiable timeline of your usage that you can rely on in any dispute with a supplier, landlord or letting agent.

All photos and readings are stored on your device only — nothing is uploaded or shared with anyone.

Step 4 – Chart Your Real Energy Usage

Energy supplier apps often feel deliberately confusing — cluttered charts, vague estimates and complicated breakdowns that make it hard to see what’s really going on.

EnergyCheck keeps it simple. With clear bar and line charts, you can see how much energy you’re using, when you’re using it, and how much it’s costing you month to month. No gimmicks — just real data in a format you can understand at a glance.

Step 5 – Export Your Data

EnergyCheck lets you export your meter readings, costs and energy usage as a CSV or PDF file whenever you need to.

Whether you want to keep a personal record, compare against historic bills, or send clear evidence to your supplier, the export feature gives you full control over your data.

We believe in transparency. With CSV and PDF export, you can store, review and manage your energy data in whatever way works best for you — without relying on any supplier portal.

Track Your Carbon Output

EnergyCheck helps you understand not just how much you’re paying, but how much you’re using. By tracking kWh over time, you can see the impact of changes you make — like cutting back on electric heating or improving insulation.

It’s a simple way to become more mindful of your energy habits and reduce unnecessary waste, which can help both your bills and the environment.

While EnergyCheck focuses on accurate billing rather than carbon accounting, understanding your true usage is the first step towards lowering both your costs and your impact. Real numbers, not guesses, give you the power to make better decisions.
